Heretical USB Cable

We've been trying to develop a great-sounding USB cable for some time now. Very early we found that it's not possible to make a carbon-fiber USB cable - the resistance is much too high. Also the kind of USB used for high quality audio - USB 2.0 - uses a much higher signaling rate than RCA/SPDIF - 480Mbits/s compared to less than 5Mbit/s - so basically it's working 100x as fast.

But our persistence has paid off. Using some techniques learned from the "Heretical" range of cables, along with some new ones developed with the Flexible Carbon/Graphene project, we are now proud to offer the Heretical USB Cable.

The Heretical-USB uses a separately screened pair that is capable of 10x the USB 2.0 data rate (5Gbits/sec). It also uses some tuning to adjust the characteristics of the cable - it's this tuning that gives 90% of the benefit of this cable. We also connect the shields in a non-standard way, to improve noise performance and RF rejection.

Why 2 meters long?

A strange thing happened during late testing of the Heretical USB - it became apparent that the 2 meter length sounded better than other lengths. This is not magic; it's due to the capacitance of the cable. 3 meters sounds better than 1 meter but not as good as 2 meters.  So it was decided to make 2 meters the minimum length. We can also do longer 3 or 5 meter cables as well.

Prices and Options

We make four types of USB cable:

- Type 1 is a normal USB cable type.
- Type 2 is a "Data only" cable - the 5VDC line is not connected. Only order this is you are sure your DAC does not need 5V on the line. See this page on how to check.
- Type 3 is a Shotgun cable, with separate data and power connectors (both USB connectors). The standard length is 2 meters for data, 1 meter for power, but we can do other lengths.
